JCU Banner

One of the world's leading institutions focusing on the tropics, James Cook University is surrounded by the spectacular ecosystems of the rainforests of the Wet tropics, the dry savannahs, and the iconic Great Barrier Reef. It’s unique location enables students from around the world to study in a diverse physical environment and its international student population promotes a rich cultural and experiential diversity on campus.

Townsville is Australia’s largest tropical city with a population of around 190,000. It’s a thriving coastal city and port, and a stepping-off point for visiting the Great Barrier Reef. Around 11,500 students study at JCU Townsville, including over 1,500 international students.

With over two million visitors annually, Cairns is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Australia. Attractions include two World Heritage natural environments – the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and the Wet Tropics ancient rainforests. Surrounded on three sides by rainforest-covered mountains the Cairns campus is located near the northern beaches in the suburb of Smithfield.Over 4,000 students study at JCU Cairns, including about 380 international students.
Housing:
  • Townsville: PLNU students should request to live with other International and Australian students in the Rotary International House. This student residence is self-catered (no meals included) and includes a single bedroom with shared bathrooms, common spaces and a shared kitchen.
    • In the event that students are not offered a housing placement in the Rotary International House, students will then request to live in the University Hall residence.
  • Cairns: PLNU students should request to live at the Cairns Student Lodge. The Lodge is conveniently located 400 metres from the JCU Cairns Campus and closely teams with JCU to offer the full university study/accommodation experience.
